Company Visits

Explore South West England and get a glimpse at the innovation and industry that makes Bristol part of the largest tech cluster outside London. Check back regularly as we add further visits to the programme!

Airbus is one the world’s largest manufacturers of commercial aircraft, with significant bases across Europe and the rest of the world. The area of Filton, North of Bristol, is home to the Airbus UK headquarters.

Engineers here are responsible for the design of wing structures, fuel systems and landing gear for the majority of commercial Airbus models. Wing assemblies for the military aircraft A400M are also manufactured in Filton, then shipped to their final assembly lines in Seville, Spain.

Take the opportunity to see the test and production facilities for some of the most complex parts of a commercial aircraft, and perhaps catch a glimpse of the new aerospace museum nearby, which houses one of the few remaining intact Concordes, which were originally produced on this site.

Bristol Robotics Lab

Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) is the most comprehensive academic centre for multi-disciplinary robotics research in the UK. It is a collaborative partnership between the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and the University of Bristol, and home to a vibrant community of over 200 academics, researchers and industry practitioners. Together, they are world leaders in current thinking on service robotics, intelligent autonomous systems and bio-engineering. An internationally recognised Centre of Excellence in Robotics, BRL’s state-of-the-art facilities cover an area of over 4,600 sq. metres (50,000 sq. feet). These facilities include workshops, wet labs, rapid prototyping facilities, flying arena and even a 16,000 litre test pool!

National Composites Centre

With over 100 specialist composite engineers, designers and technicians working on innovative composite applications the NCC aims to be the world leading centre of excellence and innovation in composite technology.

The National Composites Centre (NCC) provides industrial scale Research and Technology Development facilities to meet the needs of all sectors wishing to capitalise on the high-strength, low weight, corrosion-resistant qualities of composites materials.

The NCC is part of the UK Government’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult, a group of research centres that work with manufacturing businesses of all sizes and from all sectors. The Catapult helps turn ideas into commercial applications by addressing the gap between technology concept and commercialisation.

GKN Aerospace

GKN Aerospace is the world’s leading multi-technology tier 1 aerospace supplier.

With 55 manufacturing locations in 14 countries, they serve over 90% of the world’s aircraft and engine manufacturers; GKN design and manufacture innovative smart aerospace systems and components. Their technologies are used in aircraft ranging from the most used single aisle aircraft and the largest passenger planes in the world to business jets and the world’s advanced 5th generation fighter aircraft.

GKN recently took over the manufacturing of wing assemblies from Airbus in Filton, adding a further 250 jobs to the city when they opened a second manufacturing facility at Severn Beach.
